My 2000 model RS started making some slightly scary noises last month that told me something in the bottom end was on it's way out, seeing as i'd had so many nightmares with this bike i decided the best thing to do for now was strip the whole bike and store it over the winter, where i could take my time and get the whole bike sorted properly, the engine being the first port of call.
In an ideal situation i'd like to do this on my own although i know i'll need to send my crank to Paul to be rebuilt, the rest i'm hoping should be do-able myself.
What i need to know, is would it be feesable to replace all the bearings, seals, plastic cogs, water pump, crank rebuild and possibly replated head, or do people take the "if it aint broke don't fix it" approach and only replace what really needs it? I'm just a little wary of repairing one bit only to have something else go again, a long running story with this bike.
I'm going to be slowly going through the whole bike replacing bearings, seals, various nuts n bolts etc, some might think it's a waste of money but i'm not planning of getting rid of the bike anytime soon so i may as well make a project out of it, stops me spending money on other crap i don't need! :D
With the engine rebuild in mind, would the overall cost of the parts and sending stuff away be much less than just sending the whole engine away to be rebuilt (dont know if PJ do this or not?) If it was a case of it not being a lot more i'd probably consider sending it off to be done properly instead of my first attempt at bludgeoning the thing to death to get the old bearings out. :s
If i remember, i'll also do a stage by stage type photo blog thingy as i rebuild everything, i doubt i'll go into too much detail with that but it might come in handy for someone later on. :)
